Declutter Tips to Start Your Simple Life

"Out of clutter find simplicity; From discord harmony; In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity." - Albert Einstein

I have shared a few pictures of my decluttered closets. I hope to share more as I work my way through our home decluttering and bringing order to my chaos. I work from home a lot and that can add to the chaos. I have learned that a decluttered home helps me maintain this simple life that I find great joy in. Some of my friends have asked, "How do I start?" I started by reading about order in my home, talking to one of my BFFs (Sandra) who is very organized, and searching sites about order in the home. Here are some of the best tips I have ever found and the site I found those at:

1. Clear Off a Counter: Ok, I hate cluttered kitchen counters! It is a pet peeve of mine, so start there. Clear them off, clean them, and see how much better you feel. It will inspire you to go further in the declutter process.

2. Load up the Car for Charity: Declutter your counters and your closets. Take the stuff to a charity right away so you won't be tempted to keep it! Run. . .go now!

3. Learn to Crave Clean: Once you have an area uncluttered. . keep it that way. Enjoy the way it looks so simple and clean. Learn to love that look!

It's the journey that matters the most. . .

"It is good to have an end to journey towards; but it is the journey that matters in the end." - Ursula K. LeGuin

I can't believe that it has been a little over a month since I sat down to blog. I did this by choice. Life gets busy and requires too much of us at times. I have found that I am the one who puts these demands on myself most of the time. I have been on this journey to a simpler life and instead of writing about it all of the time I just wanted to enjoy it for a while. It turns out that for my own health . . .just enjoying the journey is exactly what I need to be doing.

The women in my family live with quite a "curse". It is called diabetes. Several months ago I was diagnosed as being insulin resistant. That is just fancy talk for pre-diabetic. I was instructed then to take better care of myself. I did so at first and then my diligence began to slip a bit. Last week I had to return to the doctor because the symptoms were worse. I am now on medication to help keep my glucose levels steady and have been put on a stricter diet. I will also begin exercising on a more regular basis. These things are all needed so that I can enjoy my "simple" life.

We take the simple things in life for granted. When is the last time you took the time to savor an ice cream cone? Enjoy it. . .and consider yourself blessed that you can eat it without becoming sick. When is the last time you enjoyed the wonder of God's beautiful sunset? Take the time and consider yourself blessed that you are still here. . .with your family. . .and able to view it!

Look for me to share some inventive "diabetic" recipes to add to your own simple life:

The Wisdom of Noodles. . .

"We have but five loaves, and two fishes." (Matthew 14:17)

Our little high school sent another wonderful class out into the "real world" at the end of May. It is always such an exciting time for high school seniors. They experience their first real tastes of freedom at the same time that they swallow a big gulp of responsibility!

I stopped by the school on Monday and had the opportunity to chat with the wonderful mother of one of our best and brightest. Her daughter is headed to Troy University on scholarship (Yayyyy. . .Amy). Her daughter is excited and will be living alone for the first time ever. Mom is of course excited as well as a bit worried. We began to talk amount how college students can learn to survive on a very tight food budget. She told me that her daughter had it all figured out. She told me that her "little girl" planned to load up the car with mama's canned beans and tomatoes when she came for a visit. The conversation progressed as we shared our tips on eating cheap when she shared a nugget of wisdom from of all people her little girl. She said, "Do you know what she said? She said, ya know mom, I like noodles. I can eat a lot of noodles!" I smiled and agreed.

I have thought about the wisdom of this young woman in that little statement. Do you hear it? She is not fussing about what she doesn't have or can't afford. This young woman is wise enough to realize that sometimes loaves and fishes (noodles) are plenty! We forget to be thankful for the simple things that bring us joy and sustain us. Who doesn't love hot noodles sprinkled with Parmesan cheese?

So tonight in honor of this wise young woman (shhhhh. . it is Amy Bishop), I took simple noodles and made a feast. We had noodles topped with cherry tomatoes, cucumber, purple onion drizzled with Light Italian and sprinkled with Parmesan. It was simply abundant with flavor!

I have another favorite with noodles: Take hot noodles and toss with high quality sun dried tomato pesto and sprinkle with Parmesan. Your family will think you have taken an Italian cooking class and all you have done is spend less than $10 and boil a little water. Now that is simple abundance! P.S. Best of luck Amy!

This is a good one:

The Wilson's Lemonade Stand

"When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. I have several stands around here." -James Brady

Hahahaha. . I love that quote. On Facebook the other day someone posted, "If life gives you lemons and expects you to make lemonade. . . why doesn't life give you sugar and water too?" I have to agree!

Joking aside, lemonade is a simple "Joy of June" that you just cannot pass up. On this journey to simple abundance we have to learn over and over again to enjoy life's simple pleasures and lemonade in June is high on my list. It just simply tastes like summer to have a large, ice-cold glass of lemonade.

I want to share with you a little Simple Joy tip that we do in our house. . .we have a lemonade stand. We always have a large container of lemonade made ready for thirsty little boys, friends, and back-door neighbors. I usually prepare it when I see that we only have a serving or two left. Now, it has to be simple for it to fit my life and bring me joy so I use Crystal Light (Country Time is great, but my mom is diabetic and doesn't need the sugar). To add variety I sometimes cut up a couple of limes and mix in the lemonade or add 1/2 cup (thawed & mashed) frozen raspberries. . .yyyuuuuummmoooo! I keep small paper cups beside our "stand" so the boys can serve themselves. . .an added plus in my book.

So bring a little June Joy into your home and set up your own lemonade stand. . . .then simply enjoy!!!

I love this old fashioned lemonade dispenser. . .check it out!

My Sanctuary!

"If I were a psychiatrist, I think I would like to inspect my patients' bathrooms before investigating any other area of their lives." -Mark Hampton

I have a little "joke" about my bathroom. I refer to it as my sanctuary. I am a wife, a mother of three boys and two dogs, a writer, a full time college student, a substitute teacher, and a new Mark representative. . .the bathroom is the only place I can go to actually pray. Don't think "uuuggghhh". . .the Creator has seen you naked, so get over it!

It came to me recently that this was no joke at all. It was the real me screaming out to make my bathroom a joy to be in. Don't you find joy when you walk into your sanctuary every Sunday. . .I walk into mine every day. . .LOL!

Organizing the bathroom is tough. Here is the first thing you need to do: Throw away the old medicines that your kid was prescribed two years ago and don't act like it's not in there. . I know better! Throw away it all. Throw away that $14 lipstick that you bought but hate; you are not going to wear it. It is just cluttering up your space and robbing you of the joy you could be finding in your own at home sanctuary. Next, really look at what all you have in there. Why do you need 20 towels? Do you have 10 kids? Are you going to go a week without doing laundry? We often clutter our lives with too many things that we think are necessary. I have come to learn that most of us could throw 1/2 of the stuff we own and be just fine.

Clean it all out. Clean your bathroom from top to bottom, slap on a fresh coat of paint if it needs it, update the hardware, and fill it with the essentials that you just love. Look on my counter. That is my makeup bag full of the Mark face cleanser, moisturizer, mascara, and lipstick that I use. The silver tin holds my hair supplies. The vanity set is a treasure to me. It belonged to my mother-in-law and brings me joy each time I walk in my bathroom. On the back of the toilet is a scripture prayer book by Beth Moore. . yes, I really pray there!

Make your bathroom your personal sanctuary. Clear our the unessential so that the Essential can speak to you. Remember this: if an item in your bathroom is not bringing you joy then it is robbing you of joy!

This is the Beth Moore prayer book I mentioned: Praying God's Word Day by Day (click to follow link)

Confessions of this clothesaholic. . clean out the skeletons!

"When we are authentic, when we keep our spaces simple, simply beautiful living takes place." - Alexandra Stoddard

I have been on the road all day and I was wondering which part of my day to share with you, then I read an e-mail from a friend. She asked me about my household organizing and inquired as to what had inspired me to begin on this journey. So. . .here it is!

I am a clothesaholic. . .well shoes too. This is not a joke. This is not to be funny. I am very serious. When the recent recession hit God began to deal with me hard about my addiction. He brought to mind all the money I have wasted over the years on clutter that did nothing but fill up my house and clothes that never got worn. I usually went and purchased something else when I had something at home. . I was just so unorganized that I did not know where to look. I could go to my closet, but that was like finding a needle in a haystack. All the colors and seasons just ran together and I would seriously stand there and say, "I have nothing to wear." There was one point in my life when I shopped on average 2-3 days per week spending at least $150-$200 each time. Let's see 2 days multiplied by 52 weeks is 104. If I spent $150 each day for 104 days. . .correct me if I am wrong, but I get $15,600. I just threw up. .that is almost a year's college tuition!!!

I was not a good steward of the money God had entrusted me with. I am ashamed. Praise be to God that He opened my eyes and is helping me every day. Sooo. . .skeleton out. . .now what about your closets? She asked me how I started. . .I started with the closets. Today's post has a picture of Matthew & Nathan's closet so you can see that their closets have been streamlined too. Start by taking it all out and cleaning your closet. . add great smelling sachets! Throw away or give away everything that you have not worn in the past 12-18 months. . just do it. Try on the rest. . if it doesn't fit. . .it goes. OK, now inventory. . .do you need 8 pairs of jeans. .can you wear them all at once? Do you really need 5 different pairs of . . ok. . breathe. . .cute red pumps. .NO! If you are now mad at me and feel attacked. . that's because you are as guilty as I am. If you decide to take on this journey and simplify. . .just jump in and start with one closet. . .just one you can do it! The Simple Joy of Simple Foods!

“I am better off with vegetables at the bottom of my garden than with all the fairies of the Midsummer Night's Dream.” - Dorothy L. Sayers (1893-1957) 'Lord, I Thank Thee'

My, my. . . June offers so many wonderful items from the garden! I do not have a "real" garden. I only have a tomato plant, a bell pepper, and cucumber; yet, I love to shop our farmers market and local grocers for nature's bounty. It is simply a joy to taste of the natural foods that God has provided for us.

Today I want to share with you that my boys love my Eggplant Parmesan. . .we just call is lasagna in our house to hide that fact that it is made from eggplant. I even assemble it lasagna style (picture below is dish 1/2 assembled). This meal is simply made of Eggplant, Italian Bread Crumbs, Spaghetti Sauce, Ricotta and Mozzarella cheeses. I like to have whole green beans (canned) tossed with Lite Italian Salad dressing on the side. Tonight we wrapped it all up with strawberries and blackberries topped with Ready Whip! The great thing about this meal is that it feeds 6-8 people for under $3.00 a serving ( I have a little left over too)! Yes, my entire meal cost me about $17.50. . .simple goodness for a simple price. That is simple abundance!

This journey to simplify my life has me looking at every aspect of daily life even our meals. God designed wonderful foods for us to enjoy. Learning to enjoy these "simple" foods in a new way is fun. I am going to experiment with eggplant more and discover what other dishes I can sneak it in. . .wonder if they will figure it out. . .LOL!

Take a trip to your farmers market or the produce section of your local grocer and try a new fresh food. There are tons of recipes online for all those yummy foods you have been afraid to try. . .simple foods bringing abundant joy to our simply abundant lives. Bon appétit!!

"I wish that life should not be cheap, but sacred, I wish the days to be as centuries, loaded, fragrant." -Ralph Waldo Emerson

I love Emerson! I do wish for life to be sacred, full, and fragrant. How about you? Part of learning to live in simple abundance is learning to enjoy the simple joys of life. What simple scents do you cherish?

The picture in today's blog is from the gardenia bush in my front yard. It is so beautiful and fragrant. The scent of gardenias brings back memories of playing in my grandmother's yard with my cousins. . .simple times full of simple joys. Since my gardenia bush has been in bloom I have been going out and bringing in a bloom each afternoon to place in my kitchen. When I awake to prepare breakfast for my family I am greeted by a creamy white blossom dripping with the sweet scent of summer. That is simply a joy!

If you have a scent that brings back fond summer memories then fill your home with that scent. Essential oils are an easy way to do this. You can purchase essential oils just about anywhere.Lavender 100% Pure Essential Oil -10ml (Greenals) Rub the oil on unfinished or unpainted wood. I rub them under my tables and chairs, inside my windowsills, and inside my wooden drawers. My favorites are gardenia, pomegranate, and lavender. I also love to have sachets of cedar (you can find at Wal-Mart in the closet supplies. . hangers. . organizers) inside my closets. . .reminds me of grandmother's house.Giles & Kendall 308 Cedar Sachet Bags

Bring simple joy to your life by bringing fragrance into your home. I promise you. . .it is a simple joy that you will learn to cherish!

June's Simple Pleasures

"I wonder what it would be like to live in a world where it was always June." -L.M. Montgomery

Wow! It is about to be June 1st. June holds so many simple pleasures for us to enjoy. I am on a journey to simply my life and in doing so I hope to find the Simple Abundance that Sarah Ban Breathnach writes about in Simple Abundance: A Daybook of Comfort of Joy click this link to find her book. . .it has changed my life and I know you will like it!

I first read this book after I had my oldest son who is about to turn 12. I put a few of the Simple Abundance practices into my life then, but now I am back at it full force. One of the things that I have tried to do is to savor the simple pleasures of life. This month I will share with you some of the simple pleasures my family is learning to enjoy and I will let you peek into my home as I work every day in some way to bring Simple Abundance to my home.

This weekend we enjoyed a June simple joy. . .watermelon! Some of my fondest memories are of eating watermelon with my family under the shade tree in summer. Go on. . .buy one today. Keep it in the fridge for 12-24 hours then simply cut it into chunks and share it on the porch or under a good 'ol shade tree. What could be better than this simple June pleasure?

Think about some of the simple pleasures that you take for granted. Write them down and begin to appreciate them more. Life's simple pleasures are often the best and the ones your family will remember most. . .welcome to June!

Simply Beautiful. . .try this!

Simple Abundance: A Daybook of Comfort of Joy (This is one of my faves. . .click to check it out)"Undoubtedly, we become what we envisage." - Claude M. Bristol

Do you realize that you are simply beautiful? You are! Right now, today, just as you are. . .you are beautiful. How do you see yourself. When you look in the mirror do you zoom in on your best or your worst trait?

In this quest to simplify my life I have to realize that I am beautiful, deserving, and worthy of a spiritually, emotionally, and physically clutter free. . .simply beautiful life. I believe that sometimes we don't try to change or think we can because we fail to love ourselves enough to try. Women have huge self worth issues. . .I know I happen to be one of those women. In order to love myself I need to like what I see when I look in the mirror. That is both an emotional and a physical mirror. The physical mirror is often the hardest one to conquer. How you see yourself or envision yourself is what you will become, so for the next step on this journey let's work on liking what we see!

This is me. . .the real me! No makeup, no blow dryer. .  ..I am "primped" free in this picture. Guess what? I don't think it is horrible and I happen to see my very best trait. . . deep blue eyes. They are beautiful. . .maybe I can see myself as beautiful after all. . .what about your best trait. . .do you see it?

I dare you to go one whole day with no makeup. . .no "primped" hair. . . .ala natural!!!! Look. . .really look in the mirror and focus on your best trait. Every time you look in the mirror focus on that perfect smile. . .or those cute freckles. . .or that porcelain skin. I dare you to test this and see if that one positive point about yourself doesn't start off a chain reaction. A positive self image is powerful. . .Simply Powerful!

Ok. . .let me know if you took the test and went "simply" beautiful (all natural) for one whole day. . .I promise this is important . . .you have to see yourself and beautiful, worthy, and deserving of a simply abundant life.

Please share this blog with your friends and become a follower of this blog. I promise. . .you won't be disappointed. . .we have got an exciting journey to Simplicity ahead of. . .we have to know we deserve it first though. . .a SIMPLY beautiful life!!

Simplicity Test #1. . .Eliminate the Unnecessary

Simplicity Test #1

"The ability of simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak." -Hans Hoffman

How do you downsize from a closet the size of a small room to this closet? I know some of you are cringing at the thought of this, but I did it. I simplified! I mentioned yesterday that we had downsized and bot did we. . .see this picture. This closet has my clothes and my husbands clothes in it. No, this is not all our clothes. This is just our Spring/Summer stuff. The Fall/Winter is in an under the beg storage container and our under garments, shorts, t-shirts, and jeans are in the wardrobe to the right in this picture and the chest of drawers (not pictured).

I did have to "purge" my closet of a lot of stuff. I am a recovering clothes and shoes addict. I am not kidding. You can see here that I still have about 50 pairs of shoes. . .I have away over 1/2 of them. I went through clothes and gave away everything that I don't wear or haven't worn in a year. Yes, gave it away and it felt great! You know what. . .even though the typical American woman has tons and tons of clothes, she wears the same 10-14 things over and over again. That is correct. . .so get rid of the stuff you don't wear. Have a garage sale, take it to a consignment shop, or just give it away (there is someone who could really use what you take for granted).Organize Your Life: Free Yourself from Clutter and Find More Personal Time

So. . .now I have done it. I have opened the world up to my private places. . . my closet! I did this because I am on a journey to simplify my life. This was one very important part of that journey. I am sharing this to let you know it can be done. It really can! You might be like I was and think, "I can't do with that few outfits. . .she is crazy!" Do me a favor and list the outfits you wear for one month. . see how many times you go to the same outfit over and over.

If you are interested in going on this journey, I would love to have company! Follow this blog and share with me your own experiences and we go together into the Promised Land of Simplicity. . .please share my blog with your friends and not that I will share links to certain books and great items that I just can't live without. Check them out!

Organized!!!!

"The ability of simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak." -Hans Hoffman

It has been way too long since I blogged. I hope to make more of a habit of it. We have been so very busy. Will just graduated from 6th grade last week. Matthew and Nathan are finishing up classes today! We are ready for a little break. Mommy will go to school straight through summer. We are praying for all of my classes to line up perfectly so that I will be all done in December. Please pray these details with us.

We have been busy moving. We moved closer to the boys' school. We love it! The move was also a downsize. We purchased a cabin that had been being used as a hunting lodge. It is so masculine, so it fits my family. . LOL! This downsize has given me the opportunity to organize. I had wanted to get organized and now I am forced to do it and I am loving it. We turned a closet into an office. This is where I am writing from right now! It works great. We used an old door from the barn as the desk and put file cabinets under it for filing. We are not finished, but it already is "home" to me. I open the doors to my little office and get excited about writing again.

This summer I plan to go on a journey. . . .a journey to simplicity. I invite you to join me by following this blog and let's see where this journey leads us!

"This is my body given for you: do this in remembrance of me." (Luke 22:19)

Oh my. . .I just realized that it has been a week since I last blogged. I have been so very busy that it is a miracle that I remember where I left my head. . .no it's not. . .I can remember that. . it is on my head!

Remembering is a good thing. Jesus gave us instructions on how to remember what he did for us. Some people call it having the Last Supper, Breaking Bread, or Communion. Whatever you call it. . it is a beautiful thing!

This past weekend my little family spent the weekend at the lake. We did not attend what you might call a "formal" church service. Instead, we gathered in our PJs at sunrise to have communion on the pier overlooking Lake Martin. The sunlight shimmered on the lake and the cool morning air awoke my senses as I watched my sons one by one participate in our private, family Holy Communion service. I listened with tears in my eyes as my oldest son, Will, led us in a prayer of thanksgiving and smiled with joy as I heard his two little brothers chime in, "Amen."

Easter is about remembrance. . .do this is remembrance of me. . .did you take time to simply remember this Easter?

Monday of Holy Week:
Offering Our Best to the One Who Offered Himself

"Then Mary took a pound of fragrant oil, pure and expensive nard, and anointed Jesus' feet and wiped His feet with her hair." John 12:3

Jesus had done an enormous miracle for Mary. He had raised her brother, Lazarus, from the dead. Mary, her sister Marth and Lazarus were very close to Jesus and loved Him dearly. So, one day, near the time when Jesus was to be crucified, Mary offered the very best she had to Jesus. She poured very expensive oil upon his feet. This oil was worth an entire year's wages for the average worker. Can you imagine giving such a costly gift to someone?

Yet, Jesus offered an even more costly gift to each one of us. . .His own life! As we contemplate our Lord's journey to the cross this week, let us consider our willingness to give our very best to the One who gave it all for us!

This was written by Pastor Dee Dowdy of Flint Hill UMC in Alexander City, AL. His devos bless me and I thought you all would enjoy it too!!! Happy Holy Week!!!

I am proud to be a donkey. . .

"Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!" (Luke 19:38)

I don't really like donkeys. There is really nothing awesome about them. . .I mean I would much rather ride a marvelous wild Mustang or a terrific Tennessee Walking horse. . .wouldn't you? Of course, riding a donkey just looks stupid! Well, guess not. . .ever read about Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday? Jesus entered riding this awkward, unintelligent animal the people cheered and sang praises. . .they weren't praising the donkey. Their praises were for the King of Kings. . .Jesus, the Christ. The donkey wasn't anything special, but we read about that dumb 'ole animal and listen to sermons about him every Easter season. Why? The dumb, awkward donkey was a servant who fulfilled a great purpose in God's plan. There is no greater calling! If God can use an ugly, awkward donkey. . .he can use me too! What about you. . .are you proud to be a donkey?

Loud Mouth Sugar. . .

This scripture picture is so cute! It reminds me of our little miniature "wienie" dog named, Sugar. She is tiny but she can certainly make a loud noise. We also have a full grown lab named Dixie. Our little Sugar is louder than Dixie when she wants to be. What does this have to do with this scripture? It doesn't matter how big or how small you are. It doesn't matter how old or how young you are. It doesn't matter how rich or how poor your are. We can all shout for joy unto the Lord our God. Go ahead. . .see if it doesn't make you feel good. Let out a loud shout of praise to the King of Kings. Go ahead and be a Loud Mouth Sugar. . .have a blesssed day!

ISS. . .

So today I had to substitute for ISS (In School Suspension). I have done this before and let me tell you it makes for a very long day. The students are to sit and work. . .no talking. . .bathroom break twice a day and just lunch. I can't help myself. I always end up talking to them. . .not chatting. . I ask them why they are there. Today a couple of students were there for fighting. We talked about the fact the fighting does not solve a thing which then led to a conversation about choices and consequences. Now, I have no visions of fairy tales. I know I can't "save" every student. I do think that I might just reach one and that one would be worth it all. Pray for me this week because I will be teaching in ISS all week. . .what if just one crazy woman acting as if she actually cares could change one student's ISS (In School Suspension) to ISS (I'm Seeking Success)?

The dream begins with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called "truth." - Dan Rather

Is it really ok momma?

"Don't live carelessly, unthinkingly. Make sure you understand what the Master wants." (Ephesians 5:17) MSG

Last week my family had the pleasure of traveling to Arkansas for one of my speaking engagements with Hopewell Ministries. We stayed with my friend, Sandra, and her family. Sandra took us by Gulpha Gorge in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas. It was beautiful. She packed us a picnic and instructed me to bring the boys' water shoes so they could play in the water. My youngest son Nathan was unsure of this at first. He just wasn't sure it was ok for him to play in the water when it wasn't even summer yet! I got so tickled at him. I cherish these moments. He questioned me several times to discern whether or not I approved of this activity. He even looked to me several times as he splashed and played for reassurance and approval. Nathan wanted to understand what I wanted him to do. We need to understand what the Master wants for our lives and just like Nathan we need to look to Him for reassurance and approval. . .look to him. . .He will cherish those moments!

Splish Splash

"The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters." (Genesis 1:2)
We are water rats! Yes, we love to swim, go boating, and even just float. It is one of the main reason that we moved in 2007 to be near the beautiful Lake Martin.
Have you ever thought about how important water is? Biologists studying primitive organisms all agree on one thing. Liquid water is absolutely essential for life to evolve and survive. Well, we all know that. . .look at Genesis 1:2. Before the earth was formed the Spirit of God hovered above the water!
Water is essential to our life and it is needed for us to evolve. Scripture calls all who are thirsty to come and drink. I invite you to follow this blog and its sister website http://www.hopewellministries.org/ for some daily Splashes of Living Water. I will share bits and pieces from my own life and share great tips and ideas that I come across.
Get ready to get soaked!
Wells of Hope,
Misty Wilson
